Carp refers to the Chinese mythology of the carp leaping over dragon’s gate, where the carps that leap over the Dragon Gate can become mighty dragons, promised by the Jade Emperor. The legend now symbolizes wishes for overnight achievements. Carp also alludes to the definition of "to complain."

Carp intends to shed light on the liminal state between transformations, whether it’s the definitions of the title or the ambiguous position of the “carp.”
